Everyone Has A Different Flavor

 What is your favorite home cooked food? This question could be the hardest question to answer because in that moment you just don’t know what to say. You have to take time to think about how and why it is your favorite home cooked food. Some home cooked food having meaning or ties to an important memory. Different cultures eat all types of food for many holidays or celebrations. One example is the Mexican holiday called Day of the Dead, they prepare a big feast and one food that is commonly made is Day of the Dead cookies. It may sound like a simple meal but it is important to those who celebrate it. The Day of the Dead is for the family members they want to remember and celebrate them even after they passed to the other side. They make food for their loved ones that have passed away. Another example is Thanksgiving in America. The general food made is turkey because of how the holiday was made. The Pilgrims had what was called the “First Thanksgiving” when they harvested in the New World. It was a celebration for them and they did it every year and they would eat turkey during Thanksgiving. Then people kept the tradition going so turkey is now a special meal served with the holiday. My favorite home cooked meal is curry goat and white rice because it has meaning to me in many ways. 

How I Feel

Curry goat and white rice makes me feel at home. My family is from the Caribbean and living in Boston is not the same as the Caribbean. The meal makes me feel at home wherever and whenever I eat it. My mom said

“One of the reasons i think you like this meal is because it tastes good with all the spices and stuff.”

I’m a picky eater, so my mom knows what I like and what I do not like. I did not really eat American food unless they bought it for me which was not a lot so I don’t like a lot of different foods now because I’m used to the Caribbean food. Curry goat can be spicy depending on how you make it. My mom makes it with putting brown sugar at the bottom of the pot before anything else and with pepper to make it spicier. In my opinion, spices can make many things taste very unique.

My Culture

It makes me feel like I am celebrating my culture. When my mom makes curry goat and white rice, it reminds me of being home and it makes me appreciate my culture and how different it is. It is hard to have to learn about your culture from a place where it is barely seen. My family and I went to the Caribbean where my mom lived last Christmas and when I was there, the feeling was so amazing and it felt like when my mom makes curry goat and white rice. Curry goat and white rice is a Caribbean dish. Curry powder is a mixture of spices and people put it on chicken, goat, and other meats. In the Caribbean, the animals roam free without fences because the people trust their animals but people’s animals stay in their yard. They have their own animals to slaughter especially goats because they raise them in the islands instead of buying the meat from stores. They have goats, chickens, sheep, pigs and other animals. Some animals are considered pets like dogs and cats which they do not eat. My mom said

“In our culture, we grow our own food and have our own animals. Your grandmother used to have a lot of goats and vegetables. The goats are raised and are there to eat instead of buying them.”

Goats are basically everywhere so they are easy to access.

Family Time

The last reason curry goat and white rice because whenever my mom makes it, everyone in my family sits together and eats it like a family dinner. Since everyone in my family likes the dish we can eat it altogether. But when I am eating it by myself, it reminds me of family dinner and it gives me a warm feeling and a comfortable feeling. My oldest sister and I are picky eaters so it is hard for my mom to make my whole family something we would all eat together. It’s hard to have a family time when everyone is on different schedules. So, spending that family time eating the same meal we all enjoy is amazing. My mom only cooks it once a month or like twice a month so I cherish those moments. My mom makes it differently from most people so it is a secret recipe.
